Most new medicines die in their trial phases, if you’ll pardon the expression. Just think about the laundry list of terrifying side effects that accompanies most any televised ad for a medicine – these are the ones that made it out of testing and into common use! One can hardly imagine all the cases of Elephantitis and Swollen Node Syndrome (or whatever) that resulted from the drugs that got the ax in testing. Sometimes, though, a drug can fail to serve the purpose for which it was intended, but end up of immense value in some totally unpredicted way.
